Toronto Student Film Festival Screening
Posted by centauri in Arts and Culture, Film Camp, Film Festival, Film festivals on April 26, 2010
On Saturday night, I attended the Toronto Student Film Festival, at the Regal Theatre in Toronto. Two of Centauri’s campers helped run the event this year (Spencer and Andrew) and it was great! The showcase of the films was an excellent mix of music videos, short films, documentaries and animation from young filmmakers under the age of 20. The judges included Deepa Mehta, Paul Gross and Niv Fichman.
Centauri was proud to sponsor one of the awards for “Best Overall Second Place” and our congratulations go to Jared Pelletier for the film “Haunted Soldier”!
You can check out the details of the festival at www.tsff.ca
Can’t wait for next year!

Backyard Film-making for Teens. March 27th and 28th 2010.
Yonah and Calvin here. We want to let you know about our Centauri-esque film-making workshop running in a couple of weeks (March 27th & 28th). The nifty thing about the workshop is the do-it-yourself, independent mentality we hope to instil in the participants. Sure, Avatar cost nearly 300 million to make, but not every film needs the same budget and scope. We’ll teach you how to make your own movie for the price of a videotape and a roll of duct tape!
We really hope you’ll be able to join us, we’ve got some exciting things in store!
Calvin Thomas and Yonah Lewis are film program directors at Centauri Arts Camp.

November 2009 News

Most of you will remember the International Tours we ran every summer, from the third to the eleventh year of Centauri. In fact, almost 100 of you joined us on those tours! We took a break from running tours for a while, after Aislyn joined our lives, but 2009 saw the first International Tour for three years! Sixteen lucky campers travelled with us to Scotland – first to experience the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and then to relax at a writing retreat in the Highlands. It was a hugely successful experience… one that we will be repeating next summer. The 2010 International Tour will be to England – focussing on the North East. We’ll explore the Viking and Medieval roots of the gorgeous city of York, wander the spectacular North York Moors, visit castles, abbeys and quaint Yorkshire villages, hunt for Vampires in the seaside town of Whitby, and then spend five days exploring art and writing in the stunning cliff-top village of Robin Hood’s Bay. A few spaces still remain on the Tour, which is open to anyone aged 13-19. You can read about it at http://www.centauri.on.ca/summer-camps/international-arts-tours.htm

Well, we are now in the middle of session 4, our last session of the summer !
Things started off on the evening of Day 1 with the “Tricky Tray”, where campers earned “Centauri Dollars” and could then bid on special items and skills given by staff (such as a serenade to the dorm).
Star wars, our intramural competition started and things are hotting up with team Draco winning right now!
Last night was our “High School Musical” evening and tonight : Ghostbusters!
Check out the photos at http://www.centauri.on.ca/media/photos/photo2008d.htm
Campers are, of course, in their programs each day, and we have already had the campers from “Music Mayhem” give us a mini-concert, with 2 great songs and some more to come tomorrow!
In 2 days we have our first Music Festival and we have 4 great performers coming to camp to run workshops and perform. Dala, Mike Ford, Aaron Solomon and Cam McCarrol!
We will keep you posted!
