Centauri Arts Camp, January News

Happy New Year to all our campers and staff  – past, present and future!

Whatever you have been celebrating these past few weeks – Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa or just the belated appearance of all the white, fluffy stuff – we hope you and your families had an amazing, relaxing and fun-filled time! Now the New Year is upon us, we’re hard at work, putting together plans for the summer. Here’s some food for thought from Centauri, to ease you into the New Year!
Space Still Remains on the International Tour!
It’s true – it’s not too late to join us next summer for the holiday of a lifetime! A bunch of lucky 13-18 year olds will travel with us to England in late August, to explore the villages, towns and cities of the North – including the Viking heritage, the beautiful North York moors, and several castles, too. We’ll hole up in York, with its Roman, Viking and Medieval history. Hike the moors as we follow in the footsteps of the famous Brontes, and explore the Vampire lore of Whitby, an ancient and gorgeous seaside town. All this in just four days – then we settle into our writing retreat in Robin Hood’s Bay, famous for smugglers in the seventeenth century, and now one of the most atmospheric and inspirational places imaginable! For five days we’ll take writing workshops in the mornings, and explore the myths and mysteries of the area in the afternoons. Our base is a beautiful house overlooking the ancient village on one side, and the cliffs and sea on the other. There will be exciting sightseeing trips from our writing retreat, as well as a chance to kick back, soak up the atmopshere, and explore your creativity. No writing experience is necessary! Want to find out more about this unique travel experience? Then check out our website at

Be a Centauri Ambassador and Get Free Tuck… and More!
One of our best sources of new campers is… you! If you’ve already attended Centauri, then you are well equipped to sing its merits to others, and many of you already do so. We’d like to reward all our campers, this summer, for the referrals they bring our way. If you tell a friend about Centauri, and they book, then we will offer you a reward of $50. This will be applied to your tuck shop account, and can be used to purchase camp merchandise, candy and treats. If you refer multiple people who book, then you can use your rewards to reduce your own camp fee, or even  put it towards an additional session! Bring 10 or more new campers to us, and we will give you an additional session at camp, free of charge! We can send along posters, fliers and brochures for you to take into your schools, and if you live within 2 hours of Toronto, we would be happy to offer presentations in your community, home or school, and even free drama workshops!

What’s New at Centaur Summer Arts Campi for Summer 2010?
Numerous staff now confirmed for this summer!
It’s true – we have more returning staff members this year than ever before! In fact, there will be only 2 counsellors next year who have not already been a camper or staff member with us, and there may be as few as 3 new program directors! This is terrific news for all our campers. Staff members who come back year after year do so because they love Centauri, and adore working with the campers. They also set themselves newer and bigger challenges for the summer – which translates into exciting workshops, unique and thrilling festivals, and a host of other activities that only an experienced and dedicated staff can provide. We’re still awaiting confirmation from several program directors who hope to return for next summer – but hopefully by February we will have a complete list for you all!

Fantastic Festivals in 2010!
We’re revamping many of our festivals for next summer. Since so many of you LOVE the Play-in-a-Day Festival (when campers create, stage and rehearse their own one act plays in just one day) we thought we’d take the idea and apply it to something else. So please welcome the first EVER Film-In-A-Day Festival! It’s true: in one of the sessions this summer, the entire camp will work together to create every possible kind of short film! There will be music videos, docudramas, short films of all genres and even stop motion animation… you name it, and we’ll be creating it – in a race against the clock, all in a single day! Whether you love to act, dance, make art, write or participate in film production, there will be something in the day for you!  We’ll begin with skills workshops, and end with a Short Film Festival!

Artsarama Nights!
If you’ve been to Centauri already, then you’ll be familiar with Pajamarama Nights – when we relax in pyjamas, and choose between campfires, beading, celtic stories, yoga, song circles and other low key activities.  Well, in 2010 we’ll be introducing ARTSARAMA nights, too, for the very first time! These will happen once per session, and will be an opportunity for campers to explore an art form in whatever creative way they choose. Imagine wandering into the writing room, to find a hat filled with writing prompts, and an instructor eager to assist you as you write whatever you please. Or working with a bunch of friends, in the theatre studio, to stage a one act play about something that inspires you all. Artsarama Nights are times for free-creation – with expert staff always on hand to offer inspiration and help. A new and exciting addition to each Centauri session!

The Centauri Arts Passport
This is something else that will be new this summer, for campers who choose to participate! All campers will receive an Arts Passport on their bunks when they arrive. When you attend elective workshops, you can ‘collect’ instructor-signatures, to win recognition as an Arts Specialist or Arts Ambassador. This will be a terrific way to record the workshops you take – and to work towards new achievements.

Articles published by Centauri
Julie has been writing a number of articles lately, about camps, for magazines across North America. The latest is to be published by the Allergy and Asthma Information Association of Canada, and advises parents on what questions to ask Camp Directors, if their child has serious allergies. You can find a copy of this article on our website at.www.centauri.on.ca..   We’ve also had articles translated into Chinese, for publication in Chinese-Canadian newspapers. Finally, we’ve given several media interviews in past weeks, and you can expect to see articles about Centauri in a number of newpapers, including the Town Crier, and the Globe & Mail.

News from Staff and Campers…

Gillian Sze, one of our Creative Writing Instructors, has had yet more work published! Two of Gillian’s poens will appear in the next issue of Ricepaper Magazine (http://ricepapermagazine.ca/. The issue also features a collaborative interview (Writers-in-Dialogue) between BC poet, Fiona Lam, and Gillian. Congratulations from us all!

Julie Hartley, one of the Directors, was a presenter at this year’s Conference for Drama and Dance teachers across Ontario (CODE). She gave a 3 hour workshop on how to teach the work of theatre practitioners such as Stanislavsky and Brecht, to Grade 10-University students. Participants included camp counsellors from the early years of Centauri, who now teach drama in schools! Julie and Craig also gave presentations about Centauri to drama and dance teachers from across Ontario… look for Centauri posters in your drama studio, or call us and we’ll mail one to you!

Free Centauri Wallpaper Available!
Would you like a Centauri photograph as wallpaper on your desktop? We have 4 downloads available free of charge. Just go to www.centauri.on.ca/media/wallpaper ….. and see cool camp photos every time you turn on your computer!

That’s all, folks! At present time, we still have space for boys and girls in every session of the summer.  Programs in Film and Stage Combat are now close to full.  If you haven’t already done so, call soon to reserve your space! We hope to share our sixteenth summer with you all!

Julie, Craig, Cheryl & Aaron
