Visual Art and Photography Department

The home of our artists and photographers! The wide range of Art and Photography programs offered at Centauri provides young people with an opportunity to develop technique and explore their creativity.  Campers have an opportunity to work individually and collaboratively, learning new skills and uncovering their own unique style. Learning is often by doing; campers discover a medium, and while they work, have access to a professional who can assist them in improving their work. In Fine Art, programs explore acrylics, watercolour, oils, charcoal, pencil and pastels, as well as clay, plaster, wire and soap carving. Photography programs include both traditional darkroom work, and digital manipulation, and our department has recently expanded to include graphic/design arts and animation.

An interest in Art or Photography can be lonely; we create a community of artists who work together, celebrate one another's achievements and inspire each other. While some programs are technique-based, others are thematic - such as creating giant puppets for an outdoor production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, working on Installations around camp, or telling the story of your life in ten photo montages. Although the emphasis is on process, everyone participates in a final project to be presented in front of an invited audience on the last day.
