At Centauri, campers explore the world of movies and television from both behind and in front of the camera, working with guidance from teachers who are themselves film-makers and actors. While some programs emphasise technique, others culminate in the creation of short movies which are screened at camp , and distributed to campers in the Fall. Our department uses DVX100 cameras, and campers also have the opportunity to work with professional boom and lighting equipment. Participants write screenplays, scout locations, try their hand at jobs on a film set, learn about movie  acting, and discover how to break into film and television through audition training and advice from those who have done it. Many of our older campers have gone on to film schools across Canada and the US, the skills they gain with us being an important factor in their acceptance.

The philosophy of our Film & Television Department is Learning by Doing! While basic instruction in the classroom is essential, we quickly move on to create movies, often analysing and replicating the styles of famous movie makers as we do so. As campers encounter challenges on a film shoot, the instructor assists in solving them, and this is how learning takes place. We teach young people to see the world through a film-maker's eye - from utilizing locations in new and interesting ways, to creatively solving the logistics of shooting.

Our Film & Television Department offers programs tailor made for different ages. Alpha programs (ages 9-14) emphasising variety, teaching campers  film-making skills by  introducing practical projects chosen to be exciting and fast-paced. Short movies produced in past years include a 20-minute adaptation of The Tempest, a silent movie version of Titanic, music videos and a reality TV show. Omega programs (ages 14-18) are more intensive, taking advantage of campers' more specialised interest and greater attention span. Campers have created movies in various genres and replicated the work of different directors - for example, a short film in the style of Woody Allen or Alfred Hitchcock. In both age ranges, different programs are offered each year, meaning campers can build on skills previous acquired.

Whether your interest is making movies or acting in them, our Film & Television Department has something for everyone!
