Our thriving Theatre Arts Department includes acting programs that cover a wide range of styles and skills, from Stage Combat to Clown, Collective Creation to Scene Study, Shakespeare to Movie Acting, and we offer programs geared to all levels, from beginner to advanced. This ensures campers can return to us year after year, and always learn something new. In addition, we often feature programs that encompass theatre production - everything from design to playwriting, stage management to directing. Our focus in Theatre Arts is on each individual's creative growth; maintaining a supportive environment so that everyone can take risks, challenge themselves and have fun!

 

The emphasis for most of our Theatre programs is on process, rather than product. Skills such as voice, character development, movement, audition skills, improvisation and ensemble work are explored in most programs. But most departments do mount a short final show. Recent productions for younger campers have included a Murder Mystery written for parents, and an exploration of Shakespeare's comedies, staged outside on a hillside. Older campers have explored Japanese theatre styles - mounting a production in the style of Noh theatre. They have explored Brecht's ideas for Epic Theatre before writing their own production based around ideas they care about, and have even used their Stage Combat skills to recreated the famous battle scenes of ancient Sparta.

 

In summer 2009 we will be unveiling a brand new building on camp - the home of our revamped ORION THEATRE! This exciting new space is set to be the heart of our Theatre Arts Department, and we're already busy purchasing a light rig, flooring and curtains to create a new Black Box Studio Theatre in time for the start of camp!
