ACTING CAMPS

AND ACTOR-COMBATANT CAMPS

Programs for younger and older actors, beginners and more experienced – our Acting Department has it all! Some programs help you develop a wide range of performance skills while others (such as Stage Combat) are more specialised. We use new material each year, so you can take each program as often as you like.

Select one choice for each session you join us at Centauri – you’ll spend 4 hours in that program each day, and take additional sports and arts electives most afternoons.

Clown: Behind the Red Nose

Ages 12-18
Session 1.

No actor’s repertoire is complete without Clown, and if you’ve ever seen one of our programs you’ll know how much fun it is, too! Think of the red nose as the smallest possible mask; like all masks, it frees you to express a different part of who you are, and that’s essential for the growth of an actor. We’ll explore different kinds of mask – neutral, character, commedia – focusing on nonverbal expression and our physical presence as actors, before beginning to clown. Rooted in the LeCoq tradition, our clowns are gentle, childlike and endearing. The final show we create be a playful combination of mask and clown, as we attempt to demonstrate for an audience that Clown is not only transformational for actors – it is also PURE JOY. Beginner and experienced clowns are welcome, but previous acting experience is essential.

A Note About our Stage Combat Programs

These programs combine action-packed themed performances with actor-combatant skills such as broadsword, rapier and dagger. Prior stage combat experience is not necessary, but you must have sufficient focus to work moves again and again as this is essential to perform safely. Actor-combatants spend part of each day in the acting studios, and part on our outdoor stage combat pad, where there is more space to wield a sword!

“There are no words to properly convey just how happy Centauri has made my son! He has spent the last 6+ hours regaling us with endless stories of his many incredible moments of the past two weeks. He has barely taken a breath as he has so much to tell us. The Play-in-a-day is very obviously a highlight as he couldn’t wait to play his original song creations for us. He had our daughter almost in tears as she couldn’t believe what her brother had accomplished in a day! She could not contain her excitement as she watched them all perform today. And we all have to concur

— what an incredible presentation! We were all so impressed with all the kids and all that they have learned in such a short time. My son said that his skills have improved so much in a short time and he is so thankful to Chris. We would love to connect with Chris and maybe see him perform at some point.

Again, thank you for a wonderful time. The music program was not the only great thing my son spoke about. He said the spirit, programming, creativity, food (!!), staff and fellow campers all contributed to a perfect experience.

We hope to see you next summer”
