Welcome to Centauri Summer Arts Camp...a great place to learn about
the arts in a community of like-minded young people from around the
world. Programs Centauri is an overnight camp for boys and girls. Our
programs
are designed to be inclusive, and to emphasize individual
growth, within a supportive community. Centauri recognizes that there
can be added social pressures on boys who have an interest in the arts
and aims to create an environment where everyone
feels comfortable
taking creative risks. Our programs include: digital photography, film,
stage combat, acting and creative writing. Arts programs are taught by
talented professionals who couple their abilities as teachers with their
dedication to their art form. Campers leaving our programs tell us that
they feel confident that the skills they learned at Centauri will help
them as they pursue their interest in the arts outside the camp
community. They also let us know what a difference it has made to find
others their own age who share their interest in the arts.
In the afternoon, campers take elective arts workshops that they choose each morning. Campers can choose to solidify their skills in an art form they already know well, or try something entirely new. Want to learn to play guitar? Learn the basics of directing? We've seen campers learn to juggle, learn basic stage combat, write brilliant short stories and shoot their first films during afternoon workshop time. A daily sports workshop is also offered. Centauri has a basketball court, a baseball diamond, a football field and a beach volleyball court.
Every night campers participate in a crazy, camp-wide activity. Examples of past evening programs include: a pirates vs. ninjas night, a superhero showdown and a night where campers create their own filmed commercials for entirely useless products.
While the camp is co-ed, boys and girls sleep in separate buildings. Boys sleep in units of two, within an open-concept dorm building. Each boy has his own locker where he can keep his personal belongings. Boys are divided into dorm groups with ten boys who are similar in age. Boys in the same dorm benefit from meeting others who share their interests.
We choose our staff carefully. Our male staff act as role models for the boys at our camp. They are dedicated, caring undergraduates who are pursuing degrees in the arts. A camper with an interest in drawing can expect to regularly spend time with, and learn from, a counselor who is, himself, completing a degree in visual art. One of the hallmarks of our staff is their willingness to spend one-on-one time with campers, creating bonds that last well past the end of the summer.
“In my opinion the best thing about Centauri is the tone which is set by its directors and the staff you hire. It is accepting, which for a child like my son, who had spent a good amount of his school life feeling unacceptable by many of his peers, means everything to him. It changed his life and let him know the world is fully of people like him who will love and value him for who he is. He went back to his high school with a new confidence and respect for himself, which was just so great.”
