Arts Extreme programs run in Session Four only, and allow campers to spend a longer period of time each day on their specialist art forms. For most programs, this means over five hours daily immersed in their chosen activities. Imagine the possibilities: time to work on different projects, and benefit from one on one feedback from arts professionals. This opportunity is particularly attractive to campers considering a career in the arts, or interested in just one art form. A wide variety of classes within each specialty is always offered, to ensure constant stimulation and enjoyment.
For younger campers, we offer an option of greater variety. Programs can be taken for the full five hours, or for four hours, with an additional arts and sports elective to enjoy.
All campers in session 4 benefit from recreational choices such as sports, yoga, water games, tai chi, crafts and aerobics. In addition, we offer the same camp spirit, dorm activities, spirit suppers, banquets and evening programs as all other sessions. Our Arts Extreme programs work towards 'demonstrations' on the final day, to which families are invited.
Join us for this exciting combination program and explore a whole
whack of acting tools! We'll work on character, mask, improv, comedy
and stage presence. Alongside this, we'll discover how actors bring
action to life on stage AND screen! We'll work on stage falls and
unarmed skills as we delve into the world of stage combat, an essential
acting skill that has been taught safely at Centauri for more than a
decade! Combat may be illusion in performance, but we'll learn ways to
make the moves look very real! During the final days of the program
we'll create and rehearse an original live performance, melding
all our skills into an exciting presentation for the final day. If you
love to act and you're looking for a program that is exciting, varied
and FUN, then join us as we live the illusion in an action packed
session full of learning and laughter.
This program is open to
beginner and experienced actor-combatants.
In this intensive visual art program for experienced artists, we'll paint, draw, sculpt and photograph, then explore ways of combining media to form exciting works of art! We'll look at the history of mixed media and examine how artists in recent years have incorporated photographs and computer graphics into more traditional work. We'll add photographs to our paintings, paint on our photographs and scan in our art work to manipulate it on the screen. We'll create site-specific art, paint or sculpt with non-typical materials, and look at how contemporary artists are transforming traditional concepts of visual art. With other departments as inspiration, we'll incorporate words, music or moving images to our creations. Artists will be encouraged to design their own project and articulate their vision to the group. Push boundaries and challenge concepts as you prepare for a uniquely interactive art presentation on the final day. Please bring along a digital camera and a USB flash drive on which to record your work.
In our 'Dance! Dance! Dance!' programs, campers get a taste of
different styles of dance - often one per day! This session, we look at
dance in movies, watching sequences from films as diverse as Annie,
Chicago, Step Up, Centre Stage and Slumdog Millionaire. We'll learn the
technical demands of these various dance styles - everything from Hip
Hop to Jazz, Bollywood to Broadway. Finally, we'll work together on
exciting choreography, taking numbers from the screen and adapting them
for live performance.
This varied and fast-moving dance program is
open to dancers and non-dancers who have a reasonable level of fitness
and an interest in exploring new things. Join us as we dance from the
screen to the stage!
ArtsQuest is a unique and exciting
introduction to the arts, designed with younger campers in mind!
On a hot summer afternoon, a stranger dressed in bizarre
clothing bursts out of the camp woods, calling for help. He claims
to be a time traveller from the year 2061, and he has a desperate
story to tell. How much should we trust him? Is there really a time
machine hidden somewhere in the woods? And could there be other time
travellers masquerading as campers and staff? We'll create our own
role-play characters as we follow the twists and turns of this
exciting, interactive adventure, using the arts to meet challenges
as they arise. Participate in a race against time where no one is
who they seem to be, threats lurk in the strangest places and only
the combined skills of the Arts Questers can save the future from
itself!
In this hands-on program we'll teach you how to turn no-budget productions into million dollar stories. We will focus on how a good cinematic story is told not with deep pockets and high priced actors but with a clear understanding of the language of film and how to use the tools available to you. Learn to write for the screen, manage a film crew, work with actors, get the best from your camera and record faultless sound. Working on several very short movies in different genres, you'll discover your strengths, improve on your weaknesses and make contacts to help you once camp is done. We will also explore opportunities for young film makers in Ontario and beyond: how to further your education and which festivals to apply to with your completed movies. This hands-on guide to film-making isn't just about what you do at camp, it's about how to keep making films once the summer is over. All films will be uploaded to the camp website in the fall for campers to view or download.
This scene study-based program is for campers with an interest in acting and some previous experience. Learn to be spontaneous, focused and alive in your performances by immersing yourself in scenes taken from existing screenplays. Embarking on an emotional journey, you will discover more about acting for film and develop a fearless relationship with the camera as you unlock the actor inside you. Since all actors work in pairs or groups of three, everyone gets to experience lead roles as we explore how to break a script down. Learn rehearsal techniques that will help you build a character and scene in the short preparation period typical of the film industry. Unlock the secrets of acting for film as we rehearse a live presentation of our scenes for the final day. Since different scenes are used each session, campers who have taken this program before are welcome to do so again.
What do directors do, and how do they get what they want from their actors? How does an actor work successfully with a director? This exciting program gives you the opportunity to experience theatre from two different perspectives: as an actor and a director! Campers will work with a variety of exciting scenes taken from contemporary theatre, and take workshops in both acting and directing. Discover how to be a great director as you experience the thrill of seeing your vision come alive on stage, then see everything from the opposite viewpoint as you act in another director's cast. All campers have the opportunity to showcase their work on the final day.
Identify a personal writing goal on day one, and we'll help you get there just eight days later! This program is divided into three segments. In the first part of each day, discover wild and fresh sources of inspiration to add to your journal of ideas as you move with us around camp, engaging in sensory walks, observation studies and guerilla writing challenges. In the second portion, we'll explore specific writing skills applicable to all genres: how to create mood, develop character, explore viewpoint and make your writing come alive on the page. For the final part of each day you'll work independently on a project of your own choosing. A critiquing circle will be offered so the advice of your peers is always on hand, and you will be able to book one on one sessions with our professional writing instructor. With so much variety in each day we'll keep you inspired, and keep you writing! Bring along that idea you have always wanted to work on - or let us help you find it - and end up with a finished product by the last day of camp!

Calling all creative writers... join us this summer and explore the world of sequential art, also known as the comic book! Campers will learn how to tell a story through the language of comics. This program is intended for young writers interested in exploring sequential art and comics. We'll work on our writing skills as we explore script writing, plot structure, and character creation - but since graphic fiction is a fusion of writing and art, we'll also explore the visual elements of storytelling - from page layouts to thumbnail panels and more. Finally, learn to combine all these elements into an 8-page comic-book story, and create a final product you can be proud of!
