Magical Moments at Centauri – Part Three

This past summer, we challenged our counsellors to find ways to incorporate magical moments into all their camp activities. At the end of the summer, we asked about some of the specific things they had done with their dorms as a result. Here are a few of their responses, with more to follow in ‘Magical Moments, Part Four’ over the next few weeks.

‘One of the most unexpected and magical moments of this summer was when a camper decided to sue his counsellor for a Mars Bar, and half the camp joined in, planning a really funny simulated court case. The trial was held in the quad and even though it was free time, nearly all the camp turned up! When something like that happens, you know the whole community is embracing magic, and that all the campers feel free to create magical moments for themselves.’

‘I did a scavenger hunt as a dorm hour where I wrapped feathers to represent dreams, seashells to represent friendship, gems to represent self, and a pipecleaner to represent individual uniqueness. I decorated a cup for each camper, cut up pieces of paper and put them in. After everyone found the four things they unwrapped them one by one and wrote two dreams, things they loved about all the other campers, then I gave them a gem and told them a unique trait about themselves. I had them represent the gem by writing down something they loved about themselves. It was a great way to boost all the campers’ self esteem and have them reflect, in a fun way, on what really mattered.’

‘I had my campers write all their hopes and fears on pieces of paper, then we folded the paper into little boats and floated them away down the river, while we sang songs together.’

More magical moments to follow soon!
