“It’s not like Camp Food!”

This was one of the comments we received from campers last summer, when we asked them what they thought about the food at Centauri Arts Camp.. Any parents who went to summer camp themselves as kids will be able to picture what this camper had in mind – after all, camp food has a certain reputation. Endless burgers. Hot dogs. Mac ‘n’ cheese. White pasta with butter. Cold pizza. Everything dripping grease and not a vegetable in sight.
This is NOT what we think of as camp food! Sure, we serve burgers, pastas, pizzas and hot dogs. But when we have a BBQ at Centauri (with hot dogs and burgers), it’s accompanied by a huge salad bar, whole wheat buns and sides such as grilled veggies, homemade vegetarian burgers and
Mexican 7-layer bean dips, also made from scratch. We serve plenty of ‘kid food’, but alongside more creative foods that will challenge their taste buds and encourage our campers to be adventurous with their choices, and try new things! As an example: each session, we have a cultural banquet, and this is something our campers get incredibly pumped about! Last year’s Japanese banquet included sushi, tempura, and more. Our Moroccan stew is so good that campers ask for the recipe to take home. Our chefs do focus on foods that have the greatest appeal (chicken is the most popular meat, for example) but they are always on the lookout for new twists on the old favourites. If you’re worried about your ‘picky eater’ – then don’t be. We are adaptable, but so are kids… and you would be surprised how, sometimes and in the right place, peer pressure can be a positive thing!

Here are some of the other things our campers had to say, at the end of last summer, about our food:

“I love the food here. I’m vegetarian and the veggie food is AMAZING”

“Surprisingly delicious and healthy”

“You have super amazing sauces as always”

“I like having the salad bar to eat from as well as the meal”

“It wasn’t what I expected for camp food and I mean this in a good way”

“I loved that vegetarian food was different and not just tofu versions of regular meat meals”

“I loved the French Toast and all the yummy food in the Russian Banquet”

“You shouldn’t give us pancakes on the last day because when we filled in this form all the paper gets stuck together with syrup”
(I put the last one in because it made me laugh… and because the camper was right!
