Many of our campers have had the pleasure of working with artist and teacher Soyeon Kim, who joined our Art Faculty last summer. Well, the wonderful book Soyeon illustrated has now been nominated for a Blue Spruce Award! We extend our hearty congratulations to Soyeon on behalf of you all – we are very, very proud of her!
The Blue Spruce Award is offered as part of The Forest of Reading, which is Canada’s largest recreational reading program and is designed to promote a love of reading in people of all ages, and also to celebrate Canadian books, authors and illustrators. ‘You Are Stardust’ was illustrated by Soyeon in her unique and magical style. The poetic text (by author Elin Kelsey), and Soyeon’s gorgeous diorama art, explore the connection all of us have to the natural world, beginning with the concept that every atom in our bodies came from a star that exploded long before we were born. While this is a picture book, the density of its ideas and the beauty of the book itself mean that it is inspirational for all ages.
Soyeon will be returning to Centauri Summer Arts Camp next summer to teach Asian Art Techniques in Session Two (ages 13-18), Make It, Use It, Wear It in Session Three (ages 9-14) and possibly also The Art of Fantasy in Session Four (ages 8-14).
